Pathways to Your TMDA Marketing Authorization
TMDA offers two routes to market and it is based on your product risk class. Choosing the right one, driven by your device class and features, decides whether you reach the Tanzanian market in weeks or in months.
Notification
For Class A devices and IVDs that are non-sterile, non-active and have no measuring function, plus medical gases. TMDA reviews a device description, 360 degree pictures, ISO 15223-1 labels and ISO 13485 evidence without a full technical assessment. About 63% of active TMDA device records use this route, at USD 50 per imported device and with 3-year validity.
2–8 Months
Full Registration Pathway
For all Class B, C and D devices and IVDs and sterile, active or measuring Class A devices. TMDA assesses the full dossier and samples, and Class C and D files go to the technical committee. CE, FDA and MDSAP evidence speeds the file, and WHOprequalified IVDs can use the WHO Collaborative Registration Procedure. Registration is valid for 5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions for TMDAMedical Device Registration Tanzania
What is TMDA medical device registration in Tanzania?
TMDA medical device registration is the marketing authorization issued by the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority, the regulator under the Ministry of Health that controls medical devices, IVDs and laboratory equipment in Mainland Tanzania under the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Act, Cap. 219. TMDA was formerly the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA). A device may not be imported, sold or supplied unless it is registered or notified, and each shipment also needs a TMDA import permit. Applications are assessed under the TMDA Compendium of Guidelines (Rev 03, June 2024) and the Control of Medical Devices Regulations, GN No. 315 of 2015, and are filed online through the TMDA Trader Portal by a Tanzania-based Local Technical Representative. TMDA covers Mainland Tanzania only; Zanzibar is regulated separately by the Zanzibar Food and Drug Agency (ZFDA).
What are the TMDA device classification classes?
TMDA uses four GHTF-based risk classes, with separate rules for general medical devices and IVDs. Class A is low risk (tongue depressors, non-sterile gauze, wheelchairs), Class B is low-to-moderate risk (hypodermic needles, suction equipment, self-test IVDs), Class C is moderate-to-high risk (ventilators, infusion pumps, orthopaedic implants) and Class D is high risk (pacemakers, heart valves, coronary stents, blood-screening IVDs). Where more than one rule applies, the highest class applies, and accessories are classified in their own right. The class decides notification or registration, the dossier depth, the fee and whether the file goes to the TMDA technical committee.
What is a Tanzania Local Technical Representative?
The applicant for TMDA authorization must be a Tanzania resident licensed by TMDA as a medical device dealer, so a foreign manufacturer must appoint a Local Responsible Person, commonly called the Local Technical Representative (LTR), Authorized Representative or Local Agent. It must be a company incorporated in Tanzania and authorized by TMDA to deal in medical devices, appointed by a Letter of Authorization. The LTR holds the authorization, answers TMDA queries, pays annual retention fees, files renewals and post-marketing surveillance reports, and handles defect reports and recalls. Most Tanzanian approvals are held by distributors, which can lock a manufacturer to one partner. NexorTest acts as an independent LTR so you can appoint or change distributors without losing control of your registrations.
What is the difference between TMDA notification and registration?
Notification is the light route for Class A devices and IVDs that are non-sterile, non-active and have no measuring function, and it also covers medical gases. It needs a device description, 360-degree pictures, ISO 15223-1 compliant labels and an ISO 13485 certificate, without a full technical review, and it is valid for three years. Registration is required for all Class B, C and D devices and IVDs and for sterile, active or measuring Class A devices. It involves a full dossier, samples and technical assessment, and it is valid for five years. WHO-prequalified IVDs can be registered through the WHO Collaborative Registration Procedure, where TMDA relies on WHO’s assessment.
How long does TMDA registration take?
The TMDA Compendium sets a service standard of 20 to 45 working days for Class A and B and up to 45 working days for Class C and D. The clock stops while a query is open and excludes any site inspection, and an application is deemed withdrawn if a query is not answered within 60 working days. Allowing for dossier preparation, samples and query rounds, a realistic plan is about 2 to 4 months for Class A, 2 to 5 months for Class B, 3 to 6 months for Class C and 4 to 8 months for Class D, whose files are decided by the TMDA technical committee. Import permits are processed within seven days but should be applied for at least six weeks before shipment.
What documents are required for TMDA registration?
A registration dossier includes the Letter of Authorization for the Local Technical Representative; device description, intended use, models, accessories and GMDN code; Declaration of Conformity with CE, FDA or other conformity evidence; a valid ISO 13485 certificate; Essential Principles checklist and ISO 14971 risk management; verification and validation such as ISO 10993 biocompatibility, electrical safety, software and sterilization data; clinical evidence for Class C and D, or performance evaluation for IVDs; market history in other countries; and labels and IFU in English and/or Kiswahili, with Kiswahili required for home-use devices and implant cards for implants. Most applications also need two commercial sample packs, while large equipment and cardiac implants can submit 360-degree images instead. All documents must be in English or Kiswahili.
What changed for TMDA medical device registration in 2026?
Three changes matter. On 24 September 2026 TMDA became an Affiliate Member of MDSAP, giving it access to MDSAP audit reports and the participating facility directory for desk reviews of manufacturer quality systems. TMDA also issued a notice reminding all registrants that biennial post-marketing surveillance reports are mandatory under GN No. 315, covering adverse events, complaints, FSCAs and recalls. Finally, the 2027 retention calendar requires holders to declare the products they will keep marketing by 1 November 2026 and pay by 31 January 2027; late payment adds 15 percent, and from 1 April 2027 undeclared or unpaid products are suspended and blocked from import permits.
What is the cost of TMDA medical device registration?
Under the TMDA Fees and Charges Regulations (GN No. 686) and the June 2024 amendment, imported medical devices cost about USD 50 for notification, USD 500 for Class A registration and USD 2,500 for Class B, C or D registration. Imported IVDs cost about USD 100 for notification, USD 300 for Class A, USD 1,000 for Class B, USD 1,500 for Class C and USD 2,000 for Class D. Variations cost USD 300 (major) or USD 150 (minor), and annual retention is USD 200 per registered and USD 50 per notified imported product. Fees are non-refundable and paid by TMDA control number. NexorTest offers transparent fixed-fee packages with government fees passed through at cost. Contact us for a free cost assessment.
